We had a blast capturing the vibrant charm of Tommi's recycled home in Hyvinkää with photographer Elisa Salomäki. It was such a joy to explore all the colorful nooks and crannies, soaking in the creativity and warmth of the space. Tommi's cat, Spööki, added an extra touch of coziness to the atmosphere.
Who lives here?
I live alone in my cottage with my cat, like an old witch, but almost every week, my young son and daughter stay with me for a few days, along with my partner.
What is your best sauna memory?
The cat isn't a fan of the sauna, but the kids love it. The best part is in the summer when we have a vintage recycled tub on the sauna deck, and the whole day is spent splashing around.
How do you sauna?
When it comes to sauna, no one should be uptight! Everyone, kids and adults alike, should have the time to practice and practice – lighting the sauna, mixing the bathwater, and learning just the right amount of steam to throw on the stones.
What is your ideal sauna like?
With my partner, we always take turns massaging each other’s feet, washing each other’s hair and back, and cooling off several times – both in winter and summer. It easily takes a couple of hours. A good-smelling soap is a must. Right now, I’m using a donkey milk soap my sister gave me. Apparently, Cleopatra bathed in donkey milk!
How would you describe your interior style?
My sauna was built during wartime on the yard of a post-war home, but today it feels like a luxury. My guests agree. Almost everything in my home is made from recycled materials. You can create a beautiful environment for almost nothing if you take the time to repurpose old things.
Any sauna traditions?
Sauna time often includes grilling, especially in summer. We have a choice between a slower charcoal grill and a quicker gas grill. Sausages are always a hit – but why not switch it up with quesadillas sometimes?
